HVIL Using COUT

Codie 1 week ago updated 21 hours ago 2

Hello I am looking at using the COUT channel to loop through a HVIL. I need to have open circuit and shorted to ground monitoring for that circuit so the COUT makes sense for that as it will fault either way and then I can generate a shutdown. My question is should I add a resistor to the circuit and if so do you have a suggested value or will it be ok to just loop HS directly to the LS? I have tested and I don't have any faults. I have set the Max Current to 30 Ma and Min to 5 Ma. then I set the Input to 50%

I'm surprised to heard that you say you don't have any error when using 5-30 mA on the COUT.

The specified range for the COUT on MC4 is 100-2500 mA.

It also requires a load to not trigger over current.

Even if you could make the circuit work with a COUT, I think you should look at the functional safety requirements on this interlock. A solution with an output driving a signal that you read in via two separate inputs is more conventional and would give you a chance of meeting FS requirements.

Hello Gustav,

When I was reading about HVIL circuit I didn't notice any designation on how it had to be accomplished just that it needed to have sensing for shorted to ground, Open load and good. COUT accomplishes all of those for me. In testing without a resistor it worked just fine. On most HVIL they will send a PWM signal out and then monitor the frequency on the other side. I wasn't able to find a way to make that work for me as I tried to use a PWM out and a Frequency in channel and PWM in channel. Also when I use the PWM out there is no current limit so its less then ideal.

this is COUT without resistor.
