Is there an upper limit, maximum number, of generic modules that can be configured on a single generic bus for an MD4 controller?
Yes, most definitely! (Engineering response coming up)
The most obvious limit I can think of is the internal representation in the firmware, that would limit you to some 65000 modules in total. Internal RAM should not be a problem on the MD4.
The question is if you want your application to do some other useful work?
Such a large amount of modules would of course have an impact on the feasible cycle time. (Perhaps such an exorbitant number of modules already would require a cycle time higher than what's currently allowed.)
Then if they were to transmit data onto said CAN bus, you would be limited by the available bandwidth on the CAN bus.
The question is what limit you would hit first. Perhaps there is some other limiting factor in regard to the above I can't think of at the moment...

Only expecting to configure around 8 generic modules on the MD4's generic bus.
You should be good then, as long as you don't flood the bus with to much traffic. Use IQANanalyze to keep an eye on bus utilization.
