VDIN to adjust function parameter values

Is there a way to use VDIN buttons (obviously not using the toggle feature) to raise and lower a function parameter by the given step size instead of using the slider?

Use a timer...how long it's pressed... or a counter - how many times it's pressed.

I did just that as after I posted the question. Just wasn't sure if there was a better way.
