Best wire for CAN connections

There does not seem to be anywhere that lays out the best wire for connecting modules together. Its well known that shielded twisted pair is the best but we have used untwisted hookup wire on many occasions with no communication problems whatsoever?

We are looking at looming a machine where the data cores could be quite close to wiring used to power solenoid coils and some advise what type of cable to use would be good? Understandably we cannot change it easily so we need to make sure we get it right first time.

In the IQAN mounting and maintenence instruction book, we actually recommend using Un-Shielded Twisted Pair, with 40 twists per meter.
Using shield could be good, but if done in the wrong way it might just as well cause problems.
