Hello, I am working with an XC43 current output that controls a bidirectional valve and want to make sure I use the right resistor to avoid problems with getting short and open load errors. I have found the minimum resistance for my case is 20ohms based on Appendix A in Parker's Family instruction book, but I am not sure how to find the maximum. Any help would be appreciated.

My recommendation is to check the specification on the valve.
There should be a current you need to achieve for full activation.
In the data sheet for the valve, you should also be able to find the resistance of the coils. In many cases you only get the coil resistance at room temperature. Count on this increasing with 30-50% as the coil heats up.
If the coil resistance rise so high that you cannot achieve the commanded current with given supply voltage, due to the law of ohm, the first symptom you will have is COUT status Saturated.
If the achievable current is <70% of commanded, the COUT gives the error open load. See Appendix B
